Sasha Velour: Travesty
Travesty is an 80-minute one-queen show with no interval, written and directed by Sasha Velour herself. In the performance, she takes the audience on a journey through the hidden queer history of a single place across time: from a witch who ends up at the stake, to a clown who builds a theatre, and an underground gay bar that rises up against police violence. With impressive lip-sync performances, layered costumes and powerful imagery, Velour explores themes such as existence, resistance and the transformative power of drag. The show is both performance art and a call to action. Travesty celebrates drag as a universal art form and emphasises that playing with gender, identity and stories is as old as humanity itself.
Envy Peru (1989) (stage name of Boris Itzkovich Escobar) is a drag queen, actor, model and activist. In 2020, she made history as the winner of the first season of Drag Race Holland and, from 2021, can be seen as a lead judge on the TV programme Make Up Your Mind. Through her television appearances and her shows in the Netherlands and beyond, she has become the country’s leading drag queen and one of the most sought-after drag queens in Europe.
In 2024, Peru became the first drag queen to take to the stage at the United Nations in New York, where she gave an inspiring talk on freedom. On 23 May, she will appear as a special guest with Sasha Velour. Expect glitter, glamour and certainly no low-key entrance, because Envy Peru doesn’t just walk in… she makes her grand entrance.
